After the release of videos and pictures showing 15th President of the Republic of the Philippines Benigno Noynoy Aquino III, Chinese news stations were quick to grab the videos and pictures and lambast the president for smiling in spite of the situation being very grim. President Noynoy’s smiling facial expression incited a lot of hate comments on nearly every Facebook profile and fanpage about the Philippine President as well as photoshopped pictures of the face of President Noynoy vandalized or with added text speech bubbles containing very humorous and not so humorous sentences. The President already issued a statement apologizing for his facial expression stating that he has a tendency to smile when things are absurd. Another statement that sparked the flames of anger of Chinese nationals.
Since then only representatives of the President began releasing statements regarding the non appearance of the President in the Rolando Mendoza Hostage taking incident. They claimed that the fault also can be blamed to the former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo citing that President Noynoy was seated as President for only 56 days compared to the 9 years of Arroyo. Spokesperson of Arroyo countered the statements saying that there have been numerous hostage incidents handled by the former Arroyo administration and most were successful coupled with the fact that there were multiple gunmen, outrageous demands and more hostages compared to the lone gunman Rolando Mendoza armed only with an M-16 and a pistol inside a bus.
Due to the mishandling of the incident and inappropriate response of President Noynoy, there have been flash games created that mocks the event. One is the Rolando Mendoza game that lets players play a shooter type game only it employs policemen rather than ducks. In the latest series of games and pictures there is now an iPhone game of President Noynoy. The game is a bash type where a player can play against a character with the face of Noynoy. Players get to choose weapons such as hammers, bats or just use fists and kicks to clobber the face of Noynoy in the game which by the way changes showing bruising, blood, swollen lips eyes and even missing teeth. Is the hatred felt by Chinese nationals justified? What about the countless Filipino Nationals that have died in Chinese held lands? There are series of solutions to the problem but one thing for sure, the commander in chief of the Philippines, President Noynoy Aquino should man up and solve the problem as soon as possible.
