It seems that victory isn’t everything. Last year No. 2 Dinara Safina almost made history in attempting to beat Serena Williams. Recently, Safina made history but this time in a resounding defeat against Kim Clijsters. Tennis fans watch open mouthed as Safina lost the second set to Clijsters making the final score 6-0 and 6-0 or “double bagel” as it’s called at the hands of Clijsters. This is the first time in the history of Tennis that a once upon a time top ranking female player has ever lost a game with such a score.
What Clijsters had to Say
Clijsters said on Reuters that she wanted to apologize for beating Safina with such a score.
“I do feel bad, I even caught myself at 5-0 in the second set, she hit a couple of backhands down the line, I was like ‘Yeah, that’s it!’
“When she doesn’t play against me, I’m rooting for her because I want her to get back into it and build confidence. But I wouldn’t give her a (sympathy) game.”
Ironically, at the start of the competition, sports analysts were already trumping up Safina’s advantage over Clijsters claiming that Safina could shoot down Clijsters chances of winning the championship. However, Safina hasn’t been on form recently. So far she’s lost five consecutive games and the recent loss isn’t doing her ranking any better. She even lost to Marion Bartoli in a 6-0, 6-1 game in Hobart and so far she hasn’t won a single Grand Slam match since last year.
Safina herself admitted that she didn’t know how to score a point against Clijsters. With her recent loss, there’s a possiblity that the rank of Safina will quickly drop from No. 2 to No. 100 in such a short time.
